My term paper for my sonar & ocean acoustics course is due on May 9th. But I have to give a presentation on my paper on April 29th. Since I’m going to have to have the paper done to know my conclusions to be able to present on them, why not make the paper due April 29th? I’m calling BS.

Maybe the presentation will give you some feedback that you can use to polish the paper. So basically the paper is due on the 29th but you have a chance for touch-ups.

This is a practical lesson in how to bullshit, a very valuable skill in the real world.

Sonar eh? you should have seen this coming (bad joke is bad)

Because this gives you a chanc
e to incorporate feedback from the draft and presentation.

That’s the way my all my term papers were last semester. I put the question to my prof and he’s like, “well it should be done by then anyways”. Uhh excuse me? That’s not the due date. It doesn’t need to be done, until the due date, that’s what a due date is.

Yeah, sorry
this is pretty much SOP in real life. Do the thing, oh yeah do it faster, cheaper and sooner than we wanted and then change everything and do it again for the same price.

Oh, trust me, I know. At work when we do a test we have to give a briefing immediately at the end of the test. Then 30 days later we send a memo which is usually “okay, we told you this stuff... it’s all wrong. Here’s what’s actually on. ” And then 90 days later we issue the final report, which again is like “Okay, 3rd time’s the charm. Now that we’ve actually had time to analyze the data, forget everything else we’ve told you, here’s whats up.”
I guess its because I deal with that crap all the time I was hoping grad class would be a little more straightforward.

I was gonna say the same thing.

This is a grad class on top of working full time. I work for the government, and I was in the Navy. I am an expert bullshiter.
Maybe I should be looking at this as my time to shine...

You mean my wife has a chance for touch ups. :D
She volunteered herself to edit my paper when she decided to “tweak” the nice note I wrote to the dog rescue we got our dog from the other night and it looked nothing like my original message. Something something dangling participle and subject verb agreement and whatever. I dunno, I are engineer.

Sounds nice to me. Get to present the paper and then go back and fix any mistakes before handing it in.

Last semester I didn’t have any papers, just a final. But this professor seems more oriented towards research and theory , the last one was more into field work and test & eval, which is what I do.
Also, at my current job due dates are usually arbitraty. See my response to Highlander. We have a timeline for products to go out, but it rarely gets met unless it’s something ultra important that they really do need answers for ASAP. The longer we got with the data the more we can suss out, so we take advantage of it when we can.

I should look at it more like that, I guess.

Good luck! Where are you going to school at? I don’t know many that have a sonar and ocean acoustics course.

Thanks. Grad school at Catholic University. I work full time, I’m just chipping away at a grad degree one course at a time.

That’s interesting a catholic university would have a class like that. My oceanography program never offered a class like that.

Yeah, seems kind of odd, but it’s been an alright class and it counts as credit .
